You Said You would destroy ISIS, Sidi Obama, So What Went Wrong

One year, 6,700 airstrikes & $4bn after Obama vowed to ‘destroy’ ISIS, jihadists still on offensive and gaining ground.

The US and its allies have now carried out 6700 airstrikes at a cost of $4 billion(ish) since, on September 10, 2014,President Barack Obama announced a campaign against Islamic State. Yet the Islamic extremist group shows no sign of defeat and has even made gains in its bid to establish a new caliphate.

Obama spoke of a “comprehensive and sustained counterterrorism strategy” to “degrade, and ultimately destroy” Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS, ISIL), referring to it as ISIL (which stood for “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” because Obama was actually funding and arming IS fighters in Syria where he hoped they would depose Assad). US drones and warplanes had already been targeting the group since early August of 2014, after IS killed two American journalists it had been holding hostage.

In the announcement, Obama outlined a strategy (he was havinh a laugh I guess, the thought of Obama devising a strategy against Islamic State made me laugh so much I nearly shat) which required US allies to conduct a “systematic campaign of airstrikes,” while the US would “increase our support to forces fighting these terrorists on the ground,” use counter-terrorism capabilities to prevent IS attacks elsewhere, and “provide humanitarian assistance to innocent civilians” displaced by the group.

Initially nameless, the campaign was dubbed “Operation Inherent Resolve” (almost as meaningless as Obama himself) in October 2014. Since then, the US and its allies have flown 53,278 sorties in Iraq and Syria, conducting a total of 6,700 airstrikes as of September 8, 2015, at a cost of $3.7 billion according to official information provided by the Pentagon.
