I love The Guardian but the editors of my favourite newspaper do have an unfortunately tendency sometimes to succumb to outbreaks of middle class angst. An example comes in todays paper when a Politicall Correct columnist calles for the term “chav” to be consigned to the trash bin of language with unacceptable terms like “pikey”, “wog” , “taffy” , “paddy” , “bint” and “pouf”.
A Political Correctness think tank that works for the extreme right wing Labour Party has described the term “chav” as revealing a deep seated middle class hatred of the white working class and stereotyping younger members of the working class as feral beasts. The writer who has reported the story obviously thinks only middle class Conservative voters use words like chave to denigrate deprived and disadvantaged youngersters from one parent families.
I wonder how any of the white working class people recently wounded in random knife attacks carried out by chavs would rect to that.
